Serhan's Ooni Pizza Ovens
This might seem like an odd piece for a website that touts the prowess of the home oven for making pizza.
But here's the reality: almost everyone who gets good at making pizza wonders about getting a pizza oven.
In our interview with Serhan Ayhan ("pizza influencer" says the New York Times), his inspiring pizzas often push the limits. In Part 2 of that conversation, we asked Serhan about his ovens.
He presently has five. One of them is his home oven. He also used to have an Ooni Pro 3, which he gave to his uncle. His other four ovens are the Ooni products below. As it happens, I think these particular ovens are some of the best consumer pizza ovens on the market today.
If you're interested in learning more about those ovens, each affiliate link below takes you to Amazon where there are descriptions of these ovens as well as lots of reviews. There are also links to the Ooni website as well. If you happen to buy any of these ovens after clicking such a link, Amazon or Ooni will be nice enough to pay Free The Pizza a paltry commission, which does not change the price on your end at all. It does help us pay our web-hosting bill. Barely.
If you want to know more about Serhan's pizzas, not to mention the pizzas he makes in them, it's highly recommended that you check out his Instagram feed @serhan_ayhan
And not to blow my own horn here...but I will. (Who else is going to do it?) Back when I wrote Free The Pizza: A Simple System For Making Great Pizza Whenever You Want With The Oven You Already Have, it was pretty clear who it was for: someone who wants to make great pizza in their home oven. I never anticipated to get fan mail from people who own ovens like Ooni, Roccbox, and other little outdoor ovens. But there they were. It blew me away. And I'm thrilled that my message of purpose and intent is resonating with pizzmakers no matter what oven they use. And if read it and it resonates with you, I'd love to hear about it.
HERE NOW, THE OVENS...
Ooni Volt
The Ooni Volt is Ooni's first entry into the indoor countertop pizza oven market. So far, it seems like people love it. And when there are so many countertop electric ovens out there, and a guy like Serhan chooses this one, it tells me that this is a product worth looking at. You can learn more about the Ooni Volt here at Amazon, or by clicking here and looking at the Ooni website.
Ooni Koda 16
For me, the Oono Koda 16 is what I would choose as an entry-level pizza oven right now. What I did choose as an entry-level outdoor oven was too crude for my purposes, and I regretted it. (It was pellet-fired, and I could never get it to reach the temperature I wanted.) And I came to that oven from a) using my standard home oven, as well as b) owning a 1200-pound, $7,000 indoor oven that lived in my kitchen. I guarantee you, it was rude awakening. But I've used this style of oven in the 12-inch version (the one below), and it's far easier. But it still has a learning curve. you will need to learn how to use it. To learn more about the Ooni Koda 16 at Amazon, click here. Or, you can follow this link and look at it on the Ooni website along with the full line of Ooni ovens.
The Ooni Koda 12 is the first gas-powered Ooni I tried, and it was an excellent experience. The only reason I would not choose this as an entry-level oven is that it's too small. I know that I would outgrow this quickly. I want to make big, New York-style pizzas. And the Koda 16 makes more sense for me. But if you're happy with a 12-inch size limit, and you really just want to make authentic, Neapolitan-style pizzas, this is a great alternative. To learn more about the Ooni Koda 12, click here to be taken to Amazon. Alternately, clicking this link takes you to the ovens page on the Ooni website.
The Ooni Karu 16 is a beast in the best way possible. If I were looking for an outdoor oven right now, this is the oven a would choose. Bigger, more real estate, easier to use, and a way to crank out pizzas one after the other. And I'd probably go with the multi-fuel version because I would convince myself that I'd use wood pellets at some point. To learn more about the Ooni Karu 16 on Amazon, click here. Or, click on the link here to see it on the Ooni website.
